Adams Rite Style Locks- How to identify the backset

Been wondering how locksmiths identify what the backset is on the Adams Rite Style aluminum storefront hardware? – read this through!

Today, the two most popular sizes you can see out in the marketplace are the 31/32 backset and the 1/8 backset.

HOW TO MEASURE EITHER ON THE DOOR OR ON THE LOCK?

To measure on the door, start from the edge of the door to the center of the hole where the mortise cylinder goes. But if you have the lock in your hand, all you have to do is hold the faceplate up to the lock like this, and you can identify it that way.

Attach the faceplate to the lock by holding it, make sure it is flat. Then, take the tape measure at the faceplate and extend it over the lock. From then, spot the measurement of where the center of the mortise cylinder hole is. In this case, it is the 1/8 mark. It means that the backset for this lock and the door is 1/8.

Using the same way, measure the other lock will give us the backset of 31/32. While some locks are going to have stamped of what the backset is on them. But with my encounters, I can say that OEM Adams Rite doesn't have it.

So, if you don't have a marking or need to measure a door, do it from the edge of the door to the center of the hole to get your backset. Thanks, and we'll see you next time.
