There can be something very mundane about servicing and rekeying padlocks. Master and their knock-off brands dominate the market, with a few others taking their share with a few unique ideas. High-end brands such as Mul-t-loc offer high security alternatives with some added benefits. Aside from these, locksmiths may be surprised to see a Kwikset Smartkey cylinder in the next padlock they service.
What Is The News On Kwikset Smartkey Padlocks?
Of course, using a Kwikset cylinder in a padlock is nothing new. American and other brands have offered a Kwikset cylinder in several sizes of their padlocks for a long time. SmartKey technology offers the same convenience to customers that their knob, lever, and deadbolt cylinders have for the last few years. The simple ease of rekeying. Owners and locksmiths alike can simply rekey a cylinder in under a minute.
This seems to be a trend in Kwikset technology. Their recently released Key Control Deadbolt seeks to allow property managers or multi-user buildings residents/owners to utilize two separate keys in a single lock, without the need to actually master key a cylinder. This progress is moving toward the elimination or need for a skilled locksmith in general lock servicing. There are certain times a locksmith will be needed, but Kwikset seems to be reducing those opportunities.
The SmartKey Padlocks have yet to prove themselves in the market place as a viable and secure padlock option, but time will certainly tell.
