What Does KW1 on a Key Mean?

"KW1" stamped on a key or listed on a blank refers to a specific Kwikset keyway. It is one of the most common house key blanks in North America.

What KW1 Means

KW1 identifies the Kwikset keyway — the profile of grooves along the blade that must match the lock's cylinder. Keys marked KW1 are compatible with Kwikset locks that use the KW1 keyway.

How Many Pins Does a KW1 Key Have?

A standard KW1 key is a 5-pin key. Six-pin Kwikset keys also exist (often designated KW10 or KW11), but 5-pin KW1 is by far the most common in homes.

KW1 Key Blanks

KW1 blanks are made by many manufacturers in standard brass, nickel and decorative finishes. Colored blanks like our neon KW1 key blanks help customers tell keys apart. Locksmiths originating keys by code can use Kwikset KW1 space and depth keys.

KW1 vs SC1

KW1 (Kwikset) and SC1 (Schlage) are the two most common residential keyways, but they are not interchangeable. A KW1 key will not fit an SC1 lock.

Rekeying KW1 Locks

Standard Kwikset KW1 locks can be rekeyed with a Kwikset re-keying kit.
