Starting in 2003 in a few vehicles, Ford began the transition to a new vehicle communications link. This new data link is based on the CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol. In these vehicles, only certain modules are on this link. The remaining modules still use the existing links. In regards to the NGS, since the CAN is a software and hardware protocol change, simply replacing the program card (a software only change) will not make the NGS or NGS XL communicate with the CAN modules. A new CAN VIM (Vehicle Interface Module), the plug in component at the base of the NGS "T" handle will be required.

The NEW NGS XL CAN will now come with two VIM's. The classic VIM, which uses the green and red software cards for 2004 & earlier models and the purple & orange software cards for 2005 & later models will perform all the necessary functions for 1996-2006 non-CAN vehicles. The NEW CAN VIM, with an additional blue software card, will perform all the necessary functions on 2003 & later vehicles that use the new data link.

In 2003 vehicles with a CAN module are the Ford Focus (with 2.3L engine only, F-series heavy-duty trucks and Excursion (with 6.0L diesel only), Thunderbird and Lincoln LS. In these vehicles, the PCM (Power Control Module) is the module using CAN. With the exception of the 2.3L Focus, ignition key reprogramming is not an issue, since the PATS function in these vehicles is not in the PCM, but the PATS, HEC or ICM module.

In 2004, the vehicle and module applications increase. In addition to the previous, the Econoline, Explorer, F150 (except Heritage), Mountaineer, Ranger, Taurus and Sable have modules using CAN. In the Explorer, F150, Mountaineer, Taurus and Sable, the PATS function is in the PCM, and the PCM is now on the CAN link.

In summary: for 2003 and 2004, vehicles with the PATS function in a module using CAN are:
   2003 - 2004 Focus with a 2.3L engine only; 2004 F150, except F150 Heritage
   2004 Explorer; 2004 Mountaineer; 2004 Taurus; 2004 Sable

See our Auto Guide for the latest information on which vehicles are using the CAN system.

To reprogram a PATS key to these vehicles requires using the CAN VIM in the NGS.

The percentage of ford vehicles that will be using CAN moving forward are:

  •    50% in 2004
  •    85% in 2005
  •    90% in 2006
  •   100% in 2007
