A Yale cylinder lock works by using a set of pins of varying lengths that align with a shear line when the correct key is inserted. Turning the key rotates the cylinder, which retracts or extends the lock bolt to open or secure the door. If the wrong key is used, the pins do not align, and the cylinder cannot turn.
