No, you do not need the original key to rekey a Kwikset lock, but it depends on the method you use. If you use the SmartKey technology, you need the current working key; otherwise, for traditional pin-and-tumbler Kwikset locks, a locksmith can rekey the lock without the original key by picking it open first.
